As Head of Retail Compliance - Commercial Mass Market, you’ll lead a team of Compliance Business Partners providing strategic and commercially grounded compliance advice to Alinta Energy’s Retail Markets business.
Reporting to the General Manager, you’ll work directly with other General Managers and senior leaders, advising on complex energy retail regulatory law (Energy Law) as it pertains to major business initiatives, incidents and technology transformation. Working closely with operational and regulatory teams, you’ll interpret and apply Energy Law in a complex operating environment, identify and mitigate risk, and help shape practical business solutions.
With Energy Law changing at an unprecedented pace, you’ll play a key role in helping the business anticipate and respond to change. This is a senior and influential role for a lawyer who combines strong legal expertise with commercial judgement and the ability to bring clarity to complex issues.

What you’ll do
- Lead and develop a high-performing retail compliance team supporting the Commercial Mass Market and Brand & Marketing teams
- Provide pragmatic, commercially grounded compliance advice to General Managers, senior leaders and business partners
- Interpret, apply and advise on complex Energy Law, and its application to business operations, major initiatives, incidents and transformation projects
- Work closely with operational and regulatory teams to identify and mitigate risks arising from Energy Law within a complex operating environment
- Continually work to strengthen the frameworks, systems and controls through which the business manages its obligations under Energy Law, and associated risks
- Represent Retail Compliance in Senior Forums and bring a clear view of Energy Law risk to business decision-making
- Tertiary qualification in Law
- Significant senior legal experience in a complex and highly regulated industry (preferably energy retail regulatory law)
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex regulatory law and provide clear, practical and commercially grounded advice on its application
- Strong experience identifying and mitigating risks arising from the application of law within a complex operational environment
- Experience embedding compliance into business operations, strategic programs and transformation initiatives
- Experience advising senior leaders on complex operational matters, major business initiatives and regulatory change
- Proven people leadership capability, with experience building and empowering high-performing teams
- Strong stakeholder influence and the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and multi-disciplinary teams
- The ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment and navigate a significant and ongoing pipeline of change
- Sound judgment and commercial acumen, with a focus on enabling business outcomes and protecting reputation
- High-level analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities

This role is best suited to a senior lawyer with strong regulatory expertise who wants to apply that expertise at the heart of a complex operating business - advising senior leaders, influencing major decisions and leading a team responsible for helping the business navigate the complexity and unprecedented pace of change in energy retail law.
